Shirley Chisholm, Unbought and Unbossed, was the first woman to run for President back in 1972. Her campaign was truly a grassroots campaign in which she appealed to those she wanted to help most: the poor, disenfranchised, African-Americans, and working people. She served in Congress for several terms and always championed Civil Rights.
